Denver, Colorado is the capital of Colorado and is the 19th most populous City in the United States. The City sits just east of Front Range of the Rocky Mountains! It’s also the 5th most populous State Capital with a little under 736,000 residents. The metropolitan area surrounding Denver, Colorado represents the majority of the population of Colorado in the Front Range region – which is where 85% of Colorado population lives. Denver is ranked as a Beta world city by the Globalization and World Cities Network. One thing to note is that the 12 county Denver – Aurora , CO metropolitan area ranks 15th most populous metropolitan area in the U.S. with over than 3.5 million people.
Denver, Colorado was named after James W. Denver , a governor of the Kansas Territory. He was governor for 1857-1858. In the summer of 1858 , during the Pike’s Peak Gold Rush , a group of prospects from Lawrence, Kansas established Montana City as a mining town. The town would become Denver later that year in 1858.
Denver is known as the Mile High City because it’s official elevation is exactly one mile above Sea Level. Denver is also nicknamed the ” Queen City of the Plains” and the ” Wall Street of the West”.
